Bournemouth cruised past Aston Villa with a 3-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time in eight seasons. Sunderland, meanwhile, survived a Brentford fightback to win 3-2 at the Stadium of Light. Marco Rose's side have now won five consecutive matches in all competitions.

  • Bournemouth recorded a third straight 3-0 win after similar results against Milan and Manchester United.
  • Amine Adli opened the scoring in the seventh minute and Álvaro Rodríguez sealed it in the 69th.
  • Aston Villa, five-time League Cup winners, lost for the first time in eight matches.
  • Sunderland scored three goals in ten minutes and reached the last eight for the first time in five years.
  • Bournemouth will visit Liverpool and Sunderland will travel to Crystal Palace.

Bournemouth put the tie beyond Villa early in the second half

Adli gave Bournemouth the lead after a slick team move. James Tavernier picked out the run with a lofted pass over the top, Julio Soler crossed from the left and the Morocco international fired into the top-right corner from six yards out.

Lewis Cook made it 2-0 six minutes after the break. The captain played a short corner on the left, received the return pass from Ben Gannon-Doak and sent in a low in-swinging delivery that deceived the keeper and crept in at the near post.

The result was wrapped up in the 69th minute. Tyler Adams intercepted a wayward pass and released Álvaro Rodríguez, who burst into the box and drove his second goal of the season into the bottom-right corner.

Unai Emery's much-changed Villa fall short on the south coast

Unai Emery reshuffled his lineup for the fourth-round tie and Aston Villa struggled to create in the early stages. Brian Madjo and George Hemmings were denied by home goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio as Villa eventually pushed for an equaliser.

Villa keeper Marco Bizot produced a superb stop to tip a Juanlu effort onto the crossbar and behind, while at the other end João Gomes and Taylor Harwood-Bellis went close. Alejandro Garnacho raced clear in search of a consolation but was denied by Di Gregorio, and fellow substitute Alysson headed a golden chance wide late on.

Bournemouth kept a fifth consecutive clean sheet and made it three 3-0 wins in a row. They now visit Liverpool in the quarter-finals, with the ties taking place during the week commencing 14 December.

Sunderland punish Brentford's missed chances

Brentford started brightly at the Stadium of Light. Nathan Collins headed straight at Melker Ellborg, Jannik Schuster crashed a header against the bar and Michael Kayode hit the post from the rebound. Ellborg also made a spectacular flying save to turn Mamadou Sangaré's volley over the crossbar.

Sunderland made the visitors pay with three goals in ten minutes. Chemsdine Talbi opened the scoring, Timur Tutierov converted after a fine run and pass from Jocelin Ta Bi, and Malick Fofana headed home another Ta Bi cross before the interval. Ta Bi was involved in all three goals.

Wilson and Thiago threaten a comeback, but Sunderland hold on

Callum Wilson pulled one back for Brentford within three minutes of the opening goal, tapping in off the bar from close range after Vitaly Janelt's scuffed effort fell to him. The striker almost added another before half-time with the score at 3-1.

Janelt and Dango Ouattara went close after the restart as Brentford pushed to reduce the deficit. Igor Thiago set up a tense finish in the fourth minute of stoppage time when his header squirmed under Ellborg to make it 3-2, but Sunderland held on to reach the last eight for the first time since the 2020-21 season, when they played in League One. They now travel to Crystal Palace.

Rose's side arrive in top form with five straight wins and five clean sheets, while Régis Le Bris' team carry the momentum of a club that was in League One five seasons ago.
