The momentum swung when referee Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot after a soft challenge by James on Chavarría. The gamble of starting so many squad players nearly backfired, but the depth of talent available to Alonso ultimately proved a difference-maker. Nights like this reinforce both the risk and the reward of trusting a squad built to compete on multiple fronts, even when only domestic trophies are on offer.

For Leeds, the pattern is painfully familiar. This was their 14th third-round exit in 18 years, another early departure despite a first-half performance that had shown real quality and desire.
