How Hull City hid the tactical plan that stunned Manchester United

Hull City's long-awaited return to the Premier League after nine years away could hardly have gone better, and behind the shock result lay a tactical plan kept quiet for weeks. Assistant head coach Dean Holden told Match of the Day that manager Sergej Jakirovic deliberately concealed his intention to change the team's shape ahead of facing a Manchester United side many expected to dominate on the opening weekend.

How Jakirovic engineered the tactical surprise

During pre-season, the Croatian coach studied several of Manchester United's friendlies, including their 4-2 defeat by AC Milan under Ruben Amorim. In that game, Milan repeatedly targeted the wing-back areas, a zone United's defence struggled to cover. That observation fed directly into the plan Hull would eventually deploy months later in the Premier League.

Holden was quick to stress, though, that this wasn't simply a copy of Amorim's approach. Jakirovic had already been considering a switch to a back five for weeks beforehand, but chose not to reveal it during pre-season matches, sticking instead with a back four to avoid tipping off future opponents.

"Serg had it in the back of his mind for three or four weeks that he was thinking of playing a back five. He didn't want to give anything away in pre-season, so we played a back four," Dean Holden explained.

The reference points behind the new system

Beyond the Milan game, Hull's coaching staff found another useful template closer to home. Leeds United, who Hull faced the week before their Championship play-off triumph, had also lined up with a back three, giving the squad valuable exposure to a similar structure before stepping up to the top flight.

A win built without needing the ball

Despite controlling barely a quarter of possession, Hull weren't fazed by seeing so little of the ball. Holden made clear that sitting in a mid-block and hitting teams on the counter is one of the club's defining strengths, not something they had to hastily adopt after promotion.

He pointed to recently promoted sides like Sunderland and Leeds as evidence that Premier League survival doesn't require dominating possession. For Hull, the message is one of collective belief: a squad without individual superstars but full of players who have earned their place through hard work and consistency.

From flirting with relegation to shocking the Premier League

The gap between where Hull stood little more than a year ago and where they are now is striking. Just 15 months before this win, the club came close to dropping into League One, surviving the 2024-25 Championship season only on goal difference. Many pundits had tipped them as favourites for an immediate return to the Championship this term.

Instead, Hull scraped into the play-offs on the final day of last season and went on to beat Middlesbrough in the final, becoming the first side in 16 years to finish sixth and still win promotion through the play-offs. Three players who started the decisive 1-1 draw with Portsmouth that secured their Championship status also featured in the win over United.

Holden, who joined Hull's staff that same summer after spells at Oldham Athletic, Bristol City and Charlton, reiterated that the club's priority remains staying in the league. Even so, he admitted that opening the campaign with a home win over a side of United's stature exceeded anything the club could reasonably have hoped for.
