Jürgen Klopp's first match as Germany head coach came with an early wave of physical problems. Musiala's late injury during the warm-up

Jamal Musiala was expected to be a central piece in Klopp's first starting eleven, but everything changed before the opening whistle. The Bayern Munich midfielder felt pain in a thigh while warming up on the Amsterdam pitch, and the German staff decided to keep him out as a precaution. Nadiem Amiri, the 29-year-old Mainz 05 player, came into the midfield as his replacement.

Musiala's absence forced Klopp to adjust his engine room on what was his official debut with the national team. The German coach took over the Mannschaft in July following Julian Nagelsmann's departure, and this game was his first real test in an official competition.

Kai Havertz leaves the pitch in the first half

Musiala's setback was not the only concern for the German bench. Half an hour into the game, Kai Havertz went down injured and was replaced by Younes Ebnoutalib of Eintracht Frankfurt. The Arsenal forward had started in attack but could not continue, deepening the selection issues for a side that had already been forced to improvise with Amiri before the match.

The German lineup reflected the late changes. Ter Stegen started in goal; the back line featured Treu, Tah, Nico Schlotterbeck and Brown; Kimmich, Felix Nmecha and Amiri formed the midfield; and Adeyemi, Havertz and Schade led the attack. The midfield suffered the first adjustment with Amiri's inclusion, and after Havertz departed early, the forward line also had to be reshaped.

Netherlands begin a new era under Xavi

Germany's opponent was also experiencing a fresh start. Xavi Hernández made his debut as Netherlands head coach with Verbruggen in goal; Dumfries, Van Hecke, Van Dijk and Van de Ven in defense; Timber, Gravenberch and Reijnders in midfield; and Summerville, Brobbey and Gakpo up front. The meeting at the Johan Cruyff Arena therefore pitted two newly-installed coaching staffs against each other in the Nations League.

Germany began their campaign in Group 2 of League A, the top tier of the Nations League, with a demanding away match against the Netherlands. The competition groups Europe's leading national teams and can provide a route into continental finals.
