The deal is structured around an initial payment of £48m to Manchester City, with a further £4m available in performance-related add-ons. City are set to make a modest profit on the player, having brought him in from Porto in January 2025 for approximately £49m.

Gonzalez's arrival pushes Newcastle's total summer outlay past the £200m mark. Even so, the club has brought in more than that through the sales of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.

The departure of captain Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal for £75m, followed by Sandro Tonali's exit, left a glaring hole in the engine room.
