Real Madrid's U19 side finally have the trophy they were missing. Álvaro López's team won the U-20 Intercontinental Cup on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Santiago Wanderers at the Santiago Bernabéu, in a final marked by the Chilean side's rough play, which ended with three players sent off. Yáñez, Santamaría and Roberto Martín scored for the Spanish side as La Fábrica completed its trophy cabinet with a world title in the first European final of this competition.

La Fábrica dressed up for the occasion and the Bernabéu responded like it does for the biggest nights. More than 50,000 spectators, including nearly 3,000 Chilean fans, backed the golden generation of Álvaro López's U19 side in their bid for world glory. The official attendance of 52,117 broke the previous record held by Maracaná and set a new world mark for a youth match. Among the notable attendees was José Mourinho, who watched the final from a box.

The interest was more than justified. In Álvaro López's starting eleven there were as many as six players who had already made their first-team debuts, three of them even in official matches. A squad hungry for history that did not let slip the chance to lift the only trophy missing from Valdebebas' shelves.

Yáñez's free kick opens the scoring and Dubó leaves the Chileans with ten men

The match started under Real Madrid's control, but it turned ugly after the quarter-hour mark due to Santiago Wanderers' physical approach. Alexis Ciria reacted to one of the unsportsmanlike actions and received a yellow card for his eagerness. The next challenge left no room for leniency: Polish referee Damian Sylwestrzak sent off Dubó with a straight red card for a reckless stamp on Yáñez in the 25th minute.

That same foul became the origin of the opening goal. Yáñez stepped up to take the free kick from the right side and struck it at chest height, losing the ball among a tangle of white and green legs. Avello, the Wanderers goalkeeper, did not see the ball's path until it was already slipping past his right side. With the 1-0 lead and a numerical advantage, Real Madrid took control and shook off their nerves.

Chilean equaliser and Madrid's late response

The surprise came after the break. A mistake by Mario Rivas in possession allowed Christian Silva to race through one-on-one against Javi Navarro and finish calmly to level the match in the 49th minute. The sudden blow did not dampen Álvaro López's side, who kept pushing forward. A header from Yeremaiah almost restored the lead for the Spanish side, who freshened things up with Liberto and Roberto Martín coming on.

The tension grew inside the Bernabéu. Javi Navarro stepped up as the saviour when he blocked a shot from Vargas that could have been fatal in the 70th minute. Álvaro López then shook up his bench and found the path to glory. A driving run from Fortea down the right to the byline ended with the ball at the feet of substitute Santamaría, who appeared in the six-yard box to stab it home and spark wild celebrations among the crowd.

The closing stages felt endless due to the constant interruptions from the Chilean side, more focused on showing their physical edge than playing football. VAR reviews, medical treatments and red cards dominated a chaotic finish in which Real Madrid could already see the trophy within reach. Yáñez had the chance to seal it from the penalty spot in stoppage time, but his effort missed the target.

The final blow came in the 90+9th minute, when Roberto Martín fired in the third goal to spark celebrations in the stands. Santiago Wanderers ended the match with three players sent off: Dubó in the first half and Carvacho in added time, plus a flurry of yellow cards that highlighted the Chilean side's aggression throughout the final. La Fábrica now have their world crown and the trophy rests in Valdebebas.
