Thomas Tuchel recalls Cole Palmer to England with a clear warning

Cole Palmer is back in the England squad. Why Tuchel left Cole Palmer out of the World Cup

Watching Palmer dismantle Premier League defences this season makes it tempting to wonder what Tuchel was thinking when he picked his World Cup squad. The clever first-time flick to set up Joao Pedro against Fulham, the sharp finish beyond Bernd Leno, the burst of acceleration before beating Bart Verbruggen from twenty yards, and the awareness to drift wide and tee up Joao Pedro again against Hull all point to a player at the top of his game.

The answer is simple: that player did not exist last season. Palmer produced 42 goal contributions for Chelsea in 2023/24 and another 32 in 2024/25, but in 2025/26 he managed only 14, including just two in his final twelve matches of the campaign. A groin injury disrupted the start of his season and he never fully recovered his best form.

Tuchel did not pick Palmer for the World Cup because he was not watching the player who scored four goals against Brighton the previous season, nor the one who dismantled PSG in the Club World Cup final twelve months earlier, notably at the New Jersey stadium that would host the World Cup final. The England boss even handed him a chance during the March international break, but in the 1-0 defeat to Japan at Wembley he looked short of confidence, far from his usual touch and like a man who had lost his way.

Tuchel's warning: a squad place is not enough

Palmer's return comes with a caveat. Tuchel welcomed the fact that the player has recovered his numbers, his assists and his decisive goals, and said that is why he is in the squad. But he also made clear that Palmer has a point to prove.

It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, getting your ticket back in the squad. But it is another thing to perform for England. Especially Cole, he needs to step up when he comes and show these kinds of numbers and performances to get his place, to keep his shirt and to justify the decision.

Palmer's England record is still modest: two goals and one assist in fourteen appearances. He could argue that he has only started six of those matches, but this new opportunity arrives with the player in form, fresh and free of injury. For Tuchel, who does not regret leaving him out of the World Cup, this renewed version of the playmaker is partly the result of the time, space, frustration and motivation that came with missing the tournament.

The battle for England's number ten role

Palmer has not had an easy path back. Phil Foden misses out despite a bright start to the season, having also been sent off in the Manchester derby. Fulham's Joshua King was considered but did not make the cut. And Morgan Gibbs-White, who has been outstanding for Nottingham Forest all year, remains on the outside looking in.

Tuchel admitted Gibbs-White came close. He highlighted the player's strong finish to the season and his key role in keeping Forest from relegation, but explained that it makes no sense to name three, four or five number tens because it does not help anyone. The final choice underlines that Palmer's selection is a specific bet rather than a symbolic return.

What Palmer can prove in the Nations League

The games against Spain, Croatia and Czechia mark the next challenge for the Chelsea forward. His talent is not in question: the way he drifts around the pitch looking for weaknesses in a defence, the ease with which he sends a defender the wrong way with a drop of the shoulder, and those sudden bursts of acceleration that contrast with his laid-back style make him a different kind of number ten.

There is something un-English about the way he solves problems on the move, and that may be exactly what this England team needs most. Tuchel does not need to discuss Palmer's quality: what he demands is that the player shows it in an England shirt. The first step was getting back into the squad. The second is to fight and perform at the highest level.

The Nations League presents the perfect stage for Palmer to close the gap between his Chelsea output and his England impact. If he does, Tuchel's decision to leave him out of the World Cup will have become the push he needed.
